Background of the Study
International trade restrictions imposed on border communities, particularly in Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area, Ogun State, have far-reaching implications for local economic activities. These restrictions, often resulting from geopolitical tensions and regulatory policies, affect cross-border trade, impacting local businesses that rely on the free movement of goods and services (Adewale, 2023). In border communities, trade serves as a critical livelihood strategy, with residents engaging in both formal and informal cross-border exchanges. The imposition of trade barriers disrupts supply chains, increases transaction costs, and limits market access (Oluwole, 2024). Such constraints not only reduce income for local traders but also hamper regional economic integration and development. Recent studies indicate that while trade restrictions may serve national security interests, they can also produce unintended adverse economic consequences for border communities (Adetokunbo, 2025). This research investigates the effects of international trade restrictions on the economic well-being of border communities in Idiroko, exploring both the immediate disruptions and the longer-term implications for sustainable local development.
Statement of the Problem
Trade restrictions imposed on border communities in Idiroko have led to severe economic disruptions. Local traders face reduced market access, increased costs, and diminished cross-border commerce, resulting in lower incomes and economic instability (Babatunde, 2024). The restrictions undermine traditional trade networks and create barriers to economic growth. This study seeks to assess the extent of these economic challenges and to identify potential strategies that could mitigate the negative impacts on border community livelihoods, thus supporting a more sustainable and resilient local economy.
Objectives of the Study:
• To assess the economic impact of international trade restrictions on border communities.
• To identify key challenges faced by traders due to reduced cross-border trade.
• To recommend strategies for mitigating adverse economic effects in border regions.
Research Questions:
• How do international trade restrictions affect border community economies in Idiroko?
• What are the major challenges local traders face due to these restrictions?
• What measures can be implemented to alleviate the negative economic impacts?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: International trade restrictions significantly reduce the economic activity of border communities.
• H2: Increased transaction costs due to trade barriers adversely affect trader income.
• H3: Policy interventions promoting cross-border cooperation can mitigate negative impacts.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant in revealing the economic impacts of international trade restrictions on border communities in Idiroko. Its findings will inform policy adjustments to ease trade barriers and support local businesses, fostering economic resilience and regional integration (Falode, 2023; Ogun, 2025). The research provides valuable insights for policymakers, traders, and stakeholders invested in sustainable border community development.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:

It focuses exclusively on cross-border trade dynamics and economic outcomes, excluding broader international trade policy analysis. Data are limited to sources relevant to the local border context.
